St. Benedict Church Calendar I

Saint Benedict Church Calendar
Copyright © 2000 by Roman Orthodox Church

I. INTRODUCTION TO THE CALENDAR

    - Everything in this Church calendar, Holy days which one observes by attendance at the Holy Mass (i.e., "Great Feasts"), and guidelines for fasting, must be understood in the proper and scriptural Christian context. Read Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chapter 14 (especially verses 5 & 6), very carefully.
The Apostle counsels against making the observance of these things an occasion for sin, or a cause for condemnation of those who do not do exactly as we believe that they ought to do. Jesus preached freedom, not bondage; the Christian who feels bound and oppressed by the rules of fasting and of religious observances is straying from the true path of Christianity.
One who condemns anyone else for his or her perceived failures in this respect has gone very far off the path indeed. All must be done "to the Lord," in loving service to God, as Saint Paul teaches. One's own conscience is the final arbiter in these matters of personal piety. Please keep this in mind as you read the guidance in this calendar.

The Church Year begins on the First Sunday of Advent (the Sunday closest to November 30th). The Temporal and Sanctoral Cycles (Proper of Time & Proper of the Saints) included herein are traditional Old Roman cycles, so any standard Roman Calendar meeting the standards in effect prior to the Second Vatican Council may be used in the case of need, if this Roman Orthodox Calendar is not available.
Note: There are 14 Great Feasts listed in this calendar. These, in addition to each Sunday, are to be considered days of obligation. All other feasts and special days listed on this calendar are to be considered valuable and beneficial, but they are not obligatory.
